The palace
Built in 1892 for a family that loved guests.
Four generations later, the same family still lights the courtyard every evening.

One hundred and thirty years of welcome
Amaira was built as a winter residence for a Jaipur nobleman who preferred guests to silence. The colonnade of Makrana marble still runs the length of the palace, cool at noon, golden by five.
Every evening at dusk our team walks the courtyard and lights one thousand and one brass lanterns by hand — a nine-minute ritual guests are welcome to join, with chai and a story.
Some of our team have been with the palace for nineteen years. They will remember how you take your chai, which side of the bed you sleep on, and the name of your daughter's dog.
Laal maas smoked over ghee and chilli from Mathania. Kulfi churned at four in the afternoon. A rooftop where the kebabs arrive with the sunset — three kitchens, one very old recipe book.
The lantern-lighting in the courtyard is the single most beautiful thing I have seen in India. We stayed four nights and never once left the palace.

We hosted my daughter's wedding here — 700 guests, and not one thing went wrong. The lawns at sunset made grown men cry.

I came for two nights on business and stayed a week. The rooftop at seven in the morning, with chai and the Aravallis, is worth the flight from London.
